Yolk Oh, No! Sure Doesn't Make My Taste Buds Sing 12/15/2011

Sorry to all those Yoko Ono fans I just offended.  I am not referring to the first lady of the Beatles, but rather factory farmed eggs.  If you have $1.99 you can enjoy pale yolks, taste bud blues and support chicken concentration camps.  Sounds like a dream come true, eh?

Blue plate special (or not so special) -factory farmed egg. Observe the pale yellow of the yolk.
If you are of a certain age, you will remember the 1980’s anti-drug advertisement where they fry the egg and opine "This is your brain on drugs".  Well folks this yolk is your body on drugs.  It comes from a chicken that eats sub-standard food and a pharmaceutical soup of antibiotics and other chemicals.  Now, I don’t blame the chicken.  I do believe though. that it is time we collectively “Just say NO!”  I guess Nancy Reagan had something right.

Factory farms that produce eggs see chickens as machines.  It is all rather Orwellian.  To them hens are a mechanism of economic output.  They are fed the cheapest food possibe and live in ‘Third World’ conditions compared to their organic sisters.  Why?  These 'farms', factories really,  want to maximize their profit.  Not your health.

When we purchase most commercially produced eggs we unknowingly support practices like de-beaking, grinding up male chicks alive, forced molting, and other widespread practices of inherent cruelty.  I don't know about you, but I just can't bring myself to support these practices, which is what we do when we buy commercially produced eggs.

Colour me crazy, but I am of the belief that happy hens lay tastier eggs.  Think about it.  If you were eating unhealthy food, were to live in over-crowded conditions and fed pharmaceuticals would you do your best work?

Gorgeous rich golden yolk goodness!

Now here is a yolk – Oh YES!  Naturally raised, with a delicious golden yolk offering a taste bud implosion that heightens the senses.  It comes from a hen raised with love and compassion.  Know your farmer.  Know your food.

Organic eggs from free range, pastured hens are perfectly imperfect.  Different sizes, shapes, colours of blue, shades of brown, white, tan or even mauve, some have ridges or spots!  Organic eggs reflect hens of a variety of breeds.  Their diversity is symbolic of a healthy hen house, for in diversity there is strength.

If you want more nutrients, fewer toxins, less cholesterol and most importantly, a better taste, buy organic eggs!  Organic eggs tend to have one-third less cholesterol and one-fourth less fat than commercially raised eggs.    Pasture-raised organic hens produce eggs that have two-thirds more vitamin A, three times more vitamin E, seven times more beta carotene and twice the omega-3 fatty acids compared to commercially produced eggs, according to a study conducted by “Mother Earth News”.

Better taste, nutritious and delicious.  Choose eggs that come from hens that are raised naturally and organically.  Support real farmers and not agri-business profit mongers.  Not only will you be putting your health first, you will also allow more hens to be treated with the compassion, respect and awe that all living beings deserve.
Now it’s time for me to enjoy my cruelty free toads in a hole.  Yummy good!

why it really is viewed as an essential addition, it is usually for the function and luxury.
